Four ways to deal with your back pain or release your soft tissue.

It is only when you study the human body in depth that you acknowledge our unique physical system as being a highly interrelated one, connected by cellular structures, and likened to layers of clingfilm.

I find myofascia, otherwise known as connective tissue, fascinating for this reason. Hey I developed a movement method out of it cause mine was SO wound up! A combination of tougher fibres, collagen determine the skeletal framework of the human body, and thinner ones, elastin determine our internal skin and/or organ shape. Organ shapes are determined by fascia, its the packing material of the body.

We have a living matrix inside us that is constantly morphing in size, shape and property. Our internal skin can build up and create visible differences in external appearance, solely through the connective tissue.

Over the years, I have had lots of fascia build up in certain areas, such as the lower back, where i have noticed what appears to be muscle bulk. However, i think I can accurately say now that the fascia has developed in this area through the excessive physical exercise I have done over the years, specifically during my dance days.

Back in 2006 when I was training to be a Pilates teacher, I began to understand that fascia can breakdown and deteriorate through specific movements and movement strategies. it also can build and get more hyper by injury and avoidance. Chemically it is the collagen in the fascia that enables connective tissue to change. Collagen has the ability to change from fluid to soft and vice versa. With chronic tension and sedentary lifestyles collagen tends to shorten and harden. I have found that when fascia reaches this stage it is stubborn to return back to its fluid state. The following body work practices- some assisted and some done DIY i have found to be the most beneficial for me and clients over the last ten years to help free up the soft tissue of the body.
