Your core lives in your back.

Oh yes it does.

The core or your centre or your powerhouse or ‘lighthouse’ as I like to refer to it as, is made up of an epic collection of muscles which when are in function operandi brilliant mode, your back will luuurve you. Or when they are not quite being utilised or being paid attention you may well run into some problemos of the back or hips.

However when these muscles are either under-utilised or over trained or in fact there are considerable imbalances amongst them, your back will def start flashing those oooh la la signals to you.

There are many different reasons why ones back plays up, sometimes there may well be no clear rime or reason as I recently discovered but we shall save that discussion for another time.

The Pilates technique is a great way to hone in and strengthen these muscle groups. So without further adue let’s take a look at these muscle groups.

Transversus Abdominals

One of the deepest of the core muscles which acts like a corset or waistcoat that wraps around from the back to the front of the body

Pelvic floor

The ‘weeeee’ muscles which live at the root of the spine and form a trampoline sling from the base of the spine to the pubic bone.

Multifidus

The multifidus muscle is a series of small, triangular muscle bundles located on either side of the spinal column that make up the 2nd layer of the deep back muscles.

Diaphragm

Oh yes this prime time breathing muscle is nestled at the base of the rib cage and coordinates with the others to assist in the back functioning well, or not as the case maybe.

The obliques

The ones that give you the waistline and connect from the base of one pair or ribs to the opposing hip

The rectus abdominals

The six pack ones which “look” great if that’s what you after. However if the others aren’t functioning brilliantly we gonna run into problemos

Any back probs you might be having could well be down to an over or under functioning of any of these muscles. So refer back to this post and go explore your lighthouses!
